Join Will as he takes the 3 Racing Sakura FGX through it’s paces. This is part 1 of a multi-part series of articles.
Just a little info on myself, I currently am racing OFF ROAD, driving the SERPENT 811 off road line of vehicles. I attend all state and national meetings Australia wide, and am currently the Victorian state delegate for AARCMCC OFF ROAD division. ON road for me is new and I have not driven an on road car for over ten years and that was just bashing around car parks, so as with most, it will be all new and a learning experience for me as well. So here we go and enjoy your drive in F1.....
This write up is of things I have sourced to try for the FGX 3 RACING F1 CHASSIS and solutions that have been tried and tested. Hopefully I can give you as much of a detailed report on build, upgrades and set up info as I can for the FGX F1.

The 3 Racing Sakura FGX is a stable and cheap way of entering the F1 RC scene.
The car retails for $109.00, the kit does not come with tyres. Tyre recommendations are below. I am upgrading the standard chassis to the EXOTEK FGX, which can also be bought at NBH and retails for $95, a bargain really, as the total cost with upgrade comes in cheaper than most Tamiya F104’s available.
Most would be using a club or mini combo ESC and motor. I’m using a NOVAK Club 17.5 Brushless system #NK 3330 ( retails for $149.00 at Intense RC) just to be at peace with any changes in F1 rules, in regards to motor and the like.
- In the UF1 series in the USA, the powers that be, recommend you upgrade to ball diff #SAK-F19 with ceramic bearings (the best upgrade you can make)
- As mentioned above I recommend the Exotek EFX Chassis Conversion
- I also recommend the Exotek Front Upper Arm Upgrade
- 2000wt in shocks
- next to softer springs
- soft sway-bars
- also try changing factory oils around shock to diff, diff to shock.
- 5 mm rear ride height
- Make sure all rear shock links are correct length to allow droop
- 10.5mm droop from flat surface to center of lower outer hinge pin
- Use AE black grease in the gear diff on asphalt, the ball diff is much better option for the rear
- soft or medium springs
- 2000wt in shocks
- next soft swaybar
- -2mm front and rear camber
- 2 degrees toe out
- All the caster you can dial in, 5 degrees is recommended, seems a little excessive to me, but it’s a personal area with set ups as other peoples set ups are and should be really used as a starting point and make it work for you with personal changes
- Upgrade caster camber block to the 3 degree plate for more steering and better handling
Set your throttle to 80% until you get the feel of it then set at max. Then make adjustments from here.
The servo to use is a low profile one eg: SAVOX sc1251 MG.
The kit comes with 3 Racing wheels. You can also use HPI F10 wheels. You can't use wheels from the Tamiya F104 or F103.

Pit Shimizu rubber tyres, these tyres will work with your FGX.

Reflex Racing Diffuser
F1 diffuser for Tamiya F1 can be matched with FGX or EXOTEK CHASSIS UPGRADE for SAKURA FGX, looks shit hot and works too. These are purchased in the USA but in the works for sale here in oz, if there is a outlet in oz please let me know as I have not found one yet.
Independent Front Suspension
Below is the new F113 upgrade for the front end IFS (independent front suspension). This will replace the standard front spring set up and make it more user friendly and more fluid motion independent of each other as with rear IRS (independent rear suspension). At this stage it’s still in the final stage of testing, but in saying that as well, it could be for release in days.
New F1 Body - JLB03 Type A (#BDY-F113)
3 Racing’s new F1 body the ‘JLB03 Type A’, made for popular direct drive F1 chassis is our first pure bred F1 race body. Incorporating crucial aerodynamic properties, the JLB03 body features fins on the nose part of the body providing essential front down force, narrow and angled raise side pods has proven to provide better stability during high speed cornering and the upper air inlet has been lowered giving a lower over height of the body. Fits the Tamiya F104 and 3 Racing’s coming soon F113 and other narrow F1 chassis with a longitudinally mounted battery pack. ABS plastic driver also included to maintain its realistic F1 body look.
F1 Front Wing (#F113-01/BL)
3Racing's new High Downforce lexan front wing for direct drive F1 chassis, fits the Tamiya F103 and F104 as well as the 3 Racing FGX, the Front Wing has been designed and tested for the purpose of performance under racing conditions. The replaceable airfoil part of the wing is made of clear lexan while the main nose part is made of impact resistant composite plastic providing the necessary structural integrity.
The wing set comes with one composite plastic nose piece and 2 replaceable wings.
F1 Rear Wing (#F113-02/BL)
The Race Spec Rear Wing for F1 chassis was designed to provide just enough downforce and stability under racing conditions. Due to the realistic design and looks of direct drive F1 chassis, comes an inherent tendency for on and off power understeer especially running foam tyres on high traction surfaces. This Race Spec Rear Wing will give your F1 Chassis much more responsive handling especially at high speeds. Fits the Tamiya F103 and F104 as well as the 3 Racing FGX, the rear wing is made of an impact resistant composite plastic and has proven exceptionally durable under heavy impact.
