Where to race
Overview of Rockingham Club in WA
20 February 2013
Rockingham RC Club are F1 enthusiasts and keen to grow their club. So if you're in WA why not check out their 2 very large on road RC tracks (yes I said 2!).
Over to Phil Mullan, President of Rockingham Electric Radio Control Car Club to explain:
We are situated in Rockingham, Perth. We are basically the only electric on road club south of the Swan River.
We had been looking to find a home for about 12 yrs and finally managed to secure a spot 18mths ago in what was originally a very large car park for 3 sporting clubs which have since been relocated. The land sat unused for about 2 yrs so we decided to move in and utilise the space and paint up a track. Following the natural course we then found a seatainer and modified it with flooring grating and handrails and also a set of steps was secured to the container. This served as the driving stand for about a year before the council decided it was deemed too much of a risk for falls when there was no racing and asked us to remove it. We negotiated and came to the agreement that we could secure the land (which has no plans for the next 15 years) and in turn we would remove the permanent driving stand and replace it with a portable trailer style unit which we use now.
We have since put in a second track which is located opposite the first and when the drivers stand is in place either track can be utilised. We are a very small club with a lot of space and enthusiasm and are looking to grow and to try to get the word out that we are here and very keen to get new members.
Currently we have 2 tracks and a driving stand, space and zero interference from any other sporting bodies or the council who occasionally come in with the road sweeper and give the track the once over otherwise we do it by hand with brooms ( the old fashioned way ). We currently hand time and manually count laps but we are hoping this will change with the addition of new members and some more keen people to help move things along.
We have now adopted the National F1 rule set version 1.1 ( we have given drivers a timeframe to change from their soft batteries to hard case as we realise it is a great expense to change all at once) and obviously we run F1 cars, we currently only have 6 drivers but are hoping to expand this soon.
We run:
- F1 with 17.5t blinky and any tires are drivers choice as the track can destroy a set of foamies in a single weekend
- Touring car 9t with blinky - open tyres
- Mini 13t with blinky and standard pinion 16t – 20t and again tyres drivers option, we run short, medium and long wheel bases
- Lemans 17.5t blinky and same tire policy, these are the same as the F1’s with only the front wing removed and a GT bumper in place and lemans bodies
We rely heavily upon data and news from sites such as RC Formula1 to keep us informed and up to date with what is happening and are eagerly anticipating making some great contacts through the site. Unfortunately we are pretty isolated over here and even then the 3 clubs that run here are fairly distant from each other.
Our track dimensions are:
White track (new)
3m wide with 4m wide back section and track length of 272mtrs
Yellow track (original)
3m wide with 4m wide back straight and track length of 221mtrs
We hope to have our webpage up and running in the next few weeks.
Thanks for the opportunity to talk with you and inclusion on your site we greatly appreciate any help we can get and are always open to ideas and suggestions.
